I’m surprised by how much I actually enjoyed this one. It’s fresh and inventive and an ode to teenage girls and their fortitude. I think it’s great.

This was not for me. I don't think I enjoyed anything about it, except for the gorgeous cover.

First. It's about sports. Specifically, women's boxing. I don't care about sports, and certainly not boxing. I read it for a reading challenge (the prompt was to read a book about women's sports). The only sport I can mildly stand to read about is running, but I was also doing another challenge and wanted to use this for both (the other prompt was a booker-nominated book).

Second. Each chapter is devoted to two of the girls who are fighting. It flashes back and forth to what they're thinking as they fight each other, to the girls stories, both past, present, and future. We learn about what becomes of each girl, how they got into the sport, what boxing does for their futures (or mostly doesn't). The book is well-written, but the chapters are long, and frankly I didn't find any of the girls particularly interesting or memorable. I couldn't even tell you their names.

Finally. I'm not sure what the point of this book was. I don't feel like I came away from this novel with anything new or profound. I don't find myself changed in any way. It mostly just reaffirmed my dislike of sports media.

The audiobook narrator was fine.

Vet, energiek, kwetsbaar. Ik wil boksen man. Wat een portretten. En wat een poëtische tegenstelling. Boksen en boeken. Meanderende zinnen en stoten. Vet.

I had high hopes for this book and it just didn’t deliver for me. It really fell flat.
