Very grim historical events from a personal pov. Goes from slow to very intense. I wish it had a happier ending because it leaves you feeling sad. Great book on the hole but not something I enjoyed reading or would pick up again.

Great read that highlights strength and resilience of women and mothers. Also as a woman and mother it was very sad and hard to read at times.

This is a heartbreaking read! I had to put this book down several times.  It's well written.  It's a great example of how messy and complicated friendship is.

Having read another of See’s books, I knew I would fall in love with the characters, however I was not expecting to be gut-wrenchingly torn from them. This is a brilliantly written example of just one woman’s story among the life on Jeju Island and the massacre that occurred there. The depth of the novel emerges when one realises that each resident of the island had their own story, that was just as detailed and heartbreaking as this one.

I spent the vast majority of my time reading this being bored and wishing for it to end. Which I knew would be the case, but it was chosen for this month's book club read, and I'm fuelled by spite. There were some small parts I enjoyed (you can probably guess which), but for the most part every chapter felt like I knew opportunity for it to tell me things I don't care about. The other 1 star reviews have articulated this well enough that I'm not going to elaborate.
