this book was so much darker than the others, and not in a gritty way. Pip experiences PTSD flashbacks throughout the book (based on the events of book 2) and is constantly ridden with anxiety, especially after the 60% mark. i did not like how
i liked this series for the murder mysteries that were difficult and interesting to try to solve along with pip during her investigations, not for lackluster vigilante justice. setting up max to be convicted not guilty in his rape case only to then have him go to prison for framed murder felt so forced and was not nearly as satisfying as it could have been to have him actually convicted for his rapist crimes in a different and more creative way.
this book honestly feels like it was written by a different author than the first 2 books; the whiplash of “anxiety, we might get caught for framing max” to “ahh yes, the police are falling for it and a weight has been lifted off my shoulders” to “oh no, hawkins said something and i think he might know it was me” happening 5 times became a bit much and made the latter 40% unenjoyable to read.
i also hated that ravi and pip had to break up just to keep him safe. that scene read like new moon where edward breaks up with bella and leaves her sobbing on the ground in the forest. it was then made even worse with the epilogue only being 1/2 of a page as a screenshot of a text message. this screenshot took all of the minuscule satisfaction out of max hastings murder conviction that there could have been.
i hope there is a novella or something to revisit the cast of characters that were so interesting and enjoyable. it pains me to say that i think this series peaked with the first book and would have been fine as standalone.
i would absolutely read anything else the author writes because the first book was so throughly saying as a murder mystery novel, but this one was not it for me unfortunately :(
