I have to say, Jackson really knows how to write tense scenes. The stalking portion was genuinely scary. The second part was pretty far-fetched, but I enjoyed it overall.

I felt like this was such a death to Pip’s character, I found myself getting so angry with her for the choices she made, and all the fallout that it caused. I still enjoyed the book, but it just felt so extreme how she started to behave. I know there was significant trauma and now the substance use, but it felt like too much of a departure from her character.

With that said I do think the story lines up well, and the plot itself felt well thought out.

2022 Review:
That was one wild ride, a good ride, but wild non the less. There were so many intense moments that were just. . .chef's kiss perfectly written.

Pip's decent was great to track nd read about through the series. I am obsessed with the fact that Elliot introduced the idea of falling down a rabbit hole in the first book, and without using those words basically ever again, we see how Pip mentally falls down it.  It's like seeing the idea of a theme growing throughout the books into a real theme that the basically, becomes the main reasoning/plot for this book.

Focusing on Pip in particular through the series. . .We all know Pip starts as the generic good girl, hell it is even in the title, but so subtly throughout the first book already, her investigation and everything that happens to her and that she witnesses changes her and by the end, she really isn't such a good girl anymore. This can be seen in small changes in her personality in the second book, which is still determined to title itself on her goodness and maybe i am reading into this, but it is because she really honestly believes she is still the same good girl, or wants to believe it anyway. But in some small ways, she is clearly no longer that exact good girl. For one, she curses a lot more in the second book and the actions and happenings of the first book constantly haunts her. She is also more ruthless in her attempt to find Jamie and then. . .by the end she is clearly no longer any form of a good girl and she has accepted it as well. She is thoroughly fucked up now and there is no stopping it and it just gets progressively worse throughout this book until she murders and knows in what state to leave the body and how to get there without any form of remorse.
Pip went from innocent detective trying to capture a cold blooded murderer, to becoming the cold blooded murderer, and it is done so perfectly, the process already starts in the first book, but of course we don't notice it then, once more adding to the rabbit hole effect. And that ability, to write like that, is what i love most about this book and the entire series.
