The Other Emily

Dean Koontz

3.23 AVERAGE

I used to love Dean Koontz books. This one was not what I've come to enjoy through the years. Unrealistic and honestly boring, I made it 90% of the way before just stopping. There are too many good books in the world to force myself to read one I'm not enjoying.

I just don't even know why I finished it. I wanted to know what kind of creature Emily was and the result was boring. The over the top love was boring too. I had high hopes but was let down.

4 star read.

Great plot. Interesting twists.

David’s character annoyed me the whole story. When he was weak, he annoyed me. When he turned into Rambo, he annoyed me.

I’m not sure I’m a fan of how this story ended. I had a different path building in my mind as I was reading.

I feel like I got lost a few times towards the end.

Dnf @ 45 pages.

It didn't click from the start, I pushed on to try to get it to click. Just didn't like it. Not for me.

I didn't expect the sci-fi elements, the book lost my interest for a while but the ending was quite good. 3.5☆

Rating: 3.5

I loved this book, but there is a whole other sub plot that just doesn’t get satisfactorily explored to my liking. The “truth” about what is going on is another story entirely and just isn’t addressed the way I would expect. How this novel is finalised is also far too convenient and it just ends on a really strange note, like he was told to wrap it up in a couple of pages.

Overall, an excellent read, just could have been even better! It reads as though it might lead to more, but I don’t know if that is the intention.

This was bizarre, and not in an entirely good way.

The first 80% was a torturous fever dream as we're forced to watch this dumb author man obsess over a woman who is clearly Not Quite Right. She could be a serial killer, but he just happily hops into bed with her repeatedly even when he knows she's patently lying about things. There's clearly some fucked up major conspiracy at play but he's just like "yeah come over for a wine, babe"?! Dude, if you took 5 minutes away from being convinced you're the best author/man who ever lived, you'd see that she could very well stab or abduct you in the night.

The Big Dumb Man Brain was REAL with this one.

The final 20% was a wild fucking ride and I desperately wish that had constituted a larger part of the story! It had the atmosphere of Fringe or The X-Files and there was clearly so much lore and back story that could've been explored. I guess it had more in common with Fringe than I thought, because it was suddenly over and the finale left me feeling like it ended mid-sentence.
