The Other Emily

Dean Koontz

Maybe a 2.5. Never fully captured my attention completely. I kept getting distracted because the story seemed to lack some specific glue that would pull it together. It's just a weird storyline.

I normally really like Dean Koontz books, but I didn’t enjoy this one nearly as much. It was ok but too sci-fi for my taste.

The idea of this book was very intriguing, and kept me reading to the end. However 90% of the book was incredibly repetitive. A small example of what the main character thinks about and says to himself for most of the book: “I love her. But she could be wicked. But, she’s Emily. Therefore, I love her. I filled her once, but I won’t kill her again. I will do anything for her.” Then, the last 10% of the book is filled with utter ridiculousness that comes out of nowhere. The main character basically spends the entire book doing stupid things and justifying it because his old girlfriend has suddenly reappeared.

My first book from this author. Sad story of David and how he cannot move on from the loss of Emily.

I don’t write reviews often bc it’s not often I actually dislike a book I’ve read. But this one, oh this one. If I wanted Sci-Fi, I would’ve found one. This crime turned science fiction is not a thriller. The story line is bizarre and misleading, I’m sad I wasted my time on it but I’m not one to quit q book halfway so I had to finish it. I was hopeful it wouldn’t go the sci-fi route, but it went full force. So if you’re a thriller, crime reader then don’t waste your time.

This book reminded me why I haven't read a Dean Koontz book in years. Don't get me wrong. He can come up with some interesting story ideas, but his prose is so stilted. It can be a chore to read his overwrought sentences. Also, I got super tired of hearing the main character go on and on about how much he loves Emily and how beautiful she is. Boring. I was going to give this 1 star, but I bumped it up to 2 for the entertaining ending.

This was a strange read with lots of flowery description and a pretty weird sci-fi premise once you get down to it. Not exactly a fun read.
