There's a decent story in here somewhere, but it's well hidden!
I love many of Dean Koontz's books, but this just isn't very good. The story telling is laboured and repetitive. Very disappointing.

This was my first Dean Koontz book Unlike other household names with a long list of book titles, I can see why Dean’s books are so popular.
Even though the hints were there I still wasn’t ready for the full sci-fi reveal. It worked well and would have worked well even as a murder mystery. Not everything was tied up by the end, and some descriptions were so detailed I skimmed a bit but otherwise it was a good read.

I suspect if I kept reading I would have gotten into the story more but as it was, I was bored. The woman was probably supposed to come across as unrealistically perfect but really just seemed obnoxious. The guy was a hot mess, secretive for seemingly no reason, guilt-ridden for reasons that would presumably become apparent if I could bring myself to care. The writing was too flowery for me, which was made more obvious by the lack of anything else happening to focus on.
I was looking for a thriller - which this might have turned in to, but 25% in and I just don't care enough to find out.

I generally just leave stars and don't write reviews, but this one sort of begs for it. I have a mixed experience with Dean Koontz books. "Twilight Eyes" is probably one of my favorite all time books and I keep reading his books looking for one that's just as good -- or even close.
It hasn't happened yet.
This one had promise. It was an interesting premise and there were enough twists and turns and red herrings to keep you guessing.
The end, though, was so unsatisfying and ended so abruptly that it dropped a star off all on its own. If I hadn't been reading on my Kindle, I might have thrown the book across the room.
It wasn't terrible but the ending was just BAD. I'm not sure what could have been done to save it, though.

It's been a long time since I read a new Koontz book. I expected it to be watered down & terrible. I'm pleasantly surprised. Not as great as his late 80s early 90s stuff. But really good. I really enjoyed this book. The premise got me from the beginning. And I've read so many of his books that I knew it was going to turn into something...to avoid spoilers I'll just call it "Different."
There were actually some creepy moments in this... Again to avoid spoilers I won't mention specifics. Not bad at all Mr Koontz.

A mixture of thriller and sci fi and crime amazing read.
