I'm a bit confused by the description of this book as a Cinderella retelling. I couldn't see  the parallels at all for most of the story.
The plot itself was dark and I liked the victorian setting. It could be repetitive at times and the main character Ella was often irritating which did put me off.
Worth reading if you like dark victorian fiction, but forget the retelling part.

I wanted so much more from this dark Cinderella story. Instead, I just kept being reminded that Ella must NOT make the last and final wish, for fear of losing her soul, which may or may not exist. Could’ve been great. Wasn’t in fact good.

More like 2.5 - A twist on Cinderella, genies and wishes is certainly what you get with this book. While the story was captivating, the writing and details were repetitive and I felt like I was reading the same lines over and over again which was unnecessary. However the worst part for me was that I am never a fan of an ending without closure and you certainly do not get closure with this book. So, it’s a good book in the sense that I want MORE, but I hate having to create my own endings in my head when there’s so much left to be desired.

This started off quite well, but I didn't like the direction that Ella's character went in and found her to be really unlikeable towards the end. Speaking of end, I was not a fan of the open ending in this book at all.

i really thought charles was gonna betray her or something but he didn’t and it made the ending so much more sad. at least he got her shoe though

Was lent this a year ago and finally finished it lol. Fun premise and good pacing but ultimately kind of toothless. Could see this as a good YA read
