WOW! Reading these and thinking about the movies or what I’ve been told is crazy! The differences and the darkness of them. I love it and I’m happy I got this and was finally able to read all of these stories.
3.75!
It was such a treat to finally read the original tales of the Little Mermaid, Ugly Duckling. These are so original and I get why Andersen is considered a genius by many. These are such intelligently told.
My favourite were Ugly Duckling, Princess and the Pea, the Emperor's Clothes, Thumbelina, Nightingale, the Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Snow Queen.

I read such good things about this new audio adaptation:
"Brought to life by Academy Award(R)-winning actor F. Murray Abraham and an ensemble cast of narrators, and featuring original music by Michael Bacon, this collection contains Hans Christian Andersen's most beloved fairy tales, as well as a selection of lesser-known favorites."
But I don't think it was the right time for me. The stories' simplicity and misogyny wore on me (even though I am familiar with them). Stopped in the middle of Thumbelina (disc 1). F. Murray Abraham does make a good narrator, and it's kind of nice to have an American voice in that typical Jim Dale/Stephen Fry sort of role.

This is not a good bedtime stories book for little kids. There's murder, revenge, bad guys winning and so forth. These aren't the cute Disney stories. People die in horrible ways.
I gave it three instead of four stars because of the high Christian feel to it. I know it was written in that time when Christianity was at an all time high, but prayers to Jesus and God and devine intervention are really not what I'm looking for in a fairy tale book.
The stories themselves are not bad, especially considering they're all original, but the cons are too much to give it more than three stars.

Super nostalgic stories for me. I really enjoyed learning about the original story behind the little mermaid.
I read this compilation ostensibly for The Little Mermaid, which was in the Classic Group short story read for the month. I quite enjoyed all these tales, but especially liked that the heroine in The Snow Queen was a girl, and also enjoyed The Steadfast Tin Soldier
