This book was gifted to me 5 years ago, and I have loved it every day since. James Herriot is a brilliant narrator; humorous, captivating, and genuine, and I laugh and cry many times while reading this, even though I know what's coming. This book never gets old, and gives the reader a new appreciation for animals and for the people around them.

This is a such a great comfort read. Animals, vet problems, animal problems, farmer problems... but they're almost all funny and everything turns out well.

If I had to use only one word to describe this book, it would be wholesome.
Herriot's experiences are by turns funny, sweet, horrifying and sorrowful, sometimes all at once. What a life of infinite variety he has had. He has a gift for story-telling, and throughout his tales his love for his voiceless charges shines through. He is patient and kind to all animals, even the most annoying ones of all - us! The variety of animals is matched by the variety of people that he meets, and his descriptions of them are wonderfully objective, even if their attitude is baffling. Siegfried, his boss, is the most baffling creature of all.
What a fairy tale romance for Herriot, and I am glad that he has found that happiness. It is no sure thing for most people, but he is lucky there.
I look forward to the next set of stories.
