Reviews with content warning for Alcoholism - Crying in H Mart

This book is, by far, the best book l've read this year. It made me unabashedly cry in an airplane next to a stranger. It made me call my mom. This book made my heart ache. I could not put it down.

I don't think I can accurately put into words the way this book made me feel. I felt so connected to the author. Although I'm not Korean, I could see so much of my latin immigrant parents in the pages of these books. I could see so much of my mom in the words Chongmi said to her daughter.

Zauner does something magical in describing both the grief and joy she has experienced surrounding her identity and her mother. She paints vivid scenes of wonderful memories surrounding food. The way she writes about them makes them come to life - as if they were in front of you in that very moment. The same is true when she writes about her griet and cried at the loss of her mother and the magnitude of her pain.

if there was ever one memoir to read, it's this one.

Beautifully written. Talks about the dark, painful parts of caring for a sick parent and grieving their death. And about the pain of being mixed race and losing your culture when you lose a parent. Plus wonderful descriptions of food.
