100% recommend the audiobook, as narrated by the author. I prefer reading memoirs this way especially if the author is the narrator as it adds a personal touch to the reading experience. It also helps with hearing how words are pronounced.

Zauner beautifully explores the mother-daughter relationship through the lens of a multiethnic family. As a second-gen immigrant & person of mixed ethnicity, I found myself relating a lot to Zauner, especially in the last two chapters. The emphasis on food served so much more to the story than just a way to make readers hungry. I often found myself craving the foods described while also experiencing the emotions felt by the author in each chapter. If you're searching for a food memoir with a bit of everything, consider checking out "Crying in H-Mart".

I will preface this review by saying that memoirs are not typically my repertoire, yet this book dragged me out of a severe case of a reading slump. Firstly, the author’s beautiful writing provides soothing comforting and ever so meaningful story of her life. I especially enjoyed how she blended food with other themes of her life. As an immigrant myself, this book was a deep relieving sign of breath, and a nice warming cup of soup. For a book with only 200 pages, it could not have been more meaningfully written. The author’s eloquent writing captivated my mind and my mouth water with all of the appealing descriptions of foods. The story of overcoming grief and overcoming disassociation with your culture truly inspired deep thought in me. This book was truly wonderful, and I am so happy that I gave a chance. You should too.

This book is, by far, the best book l've read this year. It made me unabashedly cry in an airplane next to a stranger. It made me call my mom. This book made my heart ache. I could not put it down.

I don't think I can accurately put into words the way this book made me feel. I felt so connected to the author. Although I'm not Korean, I could see so much of my latin immigrant parents in the pages of these books. I could see so much of my mom in the words Chongmi said to her daughter.

Zauner does something magical in describing both the grief and joy she has experienced surrounding her identity and her mother. She paints vivid scenes of wonderful memories surrounding food. The way she writes about them makes them come to life - as if they were in front of you in that very moment. The same is true when she writes about her griet and cried at the loss of her mother and the magnitude of her pain.

if there was ever one memoir to read, it's this one.
