First - I don't normally read ebooks. Reading something on a screen doesn't always hold my attention like an actual book, so I tend to stay away from them. I decided to try something different, however, and found this book.

Young adult books can be fun reads and this one was no exception. Young Sophie and her family inherit her great-uncle's farm and the chickens that came with it. City folk on a farm? Yeah, this seemed predictable. Thankfully, I was mistaken.

This book was funny enough to make me bust out laughing (so loud that I scared the dog AND my husband) and there were even parts that had me going, "Nooo! That can't happen!" For such a short book, it had a lot going on and was never boring. The pictures were fun to look at and gave you a blip of the story, which was cool since the pictures were fairly simple. There was even a recipe in the book!

I had a hard time deciding which reading challenge category to put this in. It falls into an epistolary novel, a novel with a recipe in it, a book with an animal in it, and of course, ebook. I would definitely recommend this for anyone who loves YA fiction or any of the above categories.

This was a silly, light read and just what I needed after a long day.

This story was cute, but I could see children getting really confused while reading it. A lot of things aren't explained very well and the reader has to make assumptions as to what is going on. For an adult, it is pretty easy to figure out, but I doubt that a child could do that.

Delightful, funny, strange, and extremely curious! Perfect for fans of farms, chickens, super powers, letter-writing, and stories about moving to a new place and finding a new spot to belong.

I think this might be a contender for my favorite book read in 2016. I know there's a ways to go in the year, but this book was just SO GREAT. It gets a five because it's so unique and awesome and fun, at the same time as being thoughtful and diverse and a great discussion book. It's rare to find a book that I feel like is as entertaining for a grownup audience as it would be for kids, and I think this is one of those books. Here's why it's awesome:

1. The entire book is written in epistolary style. The main character is writing letters to her grandmother, who has passed away, her uncle, who has passed away, and the chicken farm from which she found a catalog filled with...unusual chickens.

2. The chickens have superpowers.

3. The illustrations are FANTASTIC. Reminiscent of Quentin Blake, and so expressive and sweet and hilarious.

4. The story. It's just so silly and sweet and sad all at the same time. It's a great book for discussing grief and perseverance and change.

It's just the best. You should read it :)

I haven't read a middle grade book in a while, and I was happy that this one is written really well and doesn't feel childish. The story is told through the eyes of Sophia Brown, a 12-year-old who recently moved to a farm her family inherited, in the form of letters written to her neighbors and deceased relatives. The book also is peppered with adorable illustrations, but unfortunately they were hard to see on my kindle. This isn't a book about normal chickens. Sophie quickly discovers a chicken with special abilities, and sets about teaching herself to care for it (and convince her parents that she's up to the task) while trying to protect the chicken from a neighbor who is showing far too much interest in it.

This was another read-aloud with my kids, and it was just fine. Not entirely memorable, and the last few plot twists at the end had us all a little confused. An okay book, but perhaps a little half-baked.
