Dark Clouds, Deep Mercy: Discovering the Grace of Lament

This is a powerfully helpful book in understanding the necessity and grace of lament in the life of the Christian. Vroegop writes from long, painful, personal experience as he’s walked along a journey of lament. Even if you’re not in the midst of hard times right now, read this book!!
Arguably one of the best practical discipleship books I’ve read in the past few years. I thought I knew what it meant to lament until I read this book. In this introduction to lament Vroegop combines his own experience learning to lament with what Scripture teaches us about this unique form of prayer. I appreciated the reflection questions at the end of each chapter as well as the practical tools found in the appendix. A book I’ll be recommending for years to come!
Outstanding.
It's unusual for me to encounter a core element of the Christian faith that feels unfamiliar, but that was lament for me before this book. Vroegop concisely explains the concept, invites you into practicing it, and then helps you apply it. Consequently, this was a rich, inspiring read for me.
(full disclosure: the literary agency I work for represents Mark on this book)

I would almost mark the book 4 stars because it has some elements that are so repetitive that it almost becomes redundant. But...the material is just so good that it earns the 5 stars. I will recommend it often, and revisit it frequently. A must-read for all believers.
My hubs and I read this together as we walk through the dark cloud of my chronic illness and all it has consumed in our lives. I think the evangelical bent we're part of went through a season of taking hard lines on emotions. This was a helpful corrective on showing the nuance of the human experience, redeemed by Christ. Largely taken from Lamentations and the Psalms, Vroegop details the journey (and instruction) of lament with a shepherd's insight. Thankful for this book, and already have about five people in my life that I want to buy this for.
