Edwidge Danticat

4.15 AVERAGE

This is a really nice little collection that at its core is most concerned with the women of Haiti. There are a bevy of other themes explored through this central binding agent (suffering, mother/daughter relationships, community, etc.) but that's the core idea, and it works well. Building a tiny, tight-knit collection echoes the community it's portraying, and there's several moments here where everything comes together in a sunbeamy type of way, and those moments really make the collection worth reading. My favorite story by far was "Caroline's Wedding," but I also enjoyed "A Wall of Fire Rising" and "Seeing Things Simply."

It’s a crime that I’m only discovering the works of Edwidge Danticat now. I had to stop myself from finishing the book in one sitting because I didn’t want it to end. The epilogue brought the whole collection home. At its core this book is about telling those stories that are lost to history. Just painfully beautiful.

Some of the  short stories were very thought provoking and I even liked how some of them seemed to link with others. However some of them also felt a Bit slow. I think a reread is needed,  there’s a lot to analyze.
