Great book of stories inspired by the horrific history of Haiti...but very depressing as it has to be in order to stay true to historic details.

„Children of the sea“ seems to be the story that gets applauded the most, but „Caroline‘s wedding” is the one that made me cry.
I’m an emotional reader.

Short story collections are awesome when done well. All the stories spring from a Haitian town called Ville Rose even when they take place in New York and Port-au-Prince. Danticat writes about a number of issues including immigration, living under a dictatorship and the bonds of family ties under all these conditions. For me, the first story "Children of the Sea" is most heartbreaking, coming from the perspective of a young girl chronicling her story in a journal in the form of letters to the love from which she is separated, who also writes letters to her. Circumstances force them apart and do not make for a happy ending. So goes many of the stories in Danticat's collection. In small ways, the stories interconnect but stand alone as well. Danticat's perspective is heartbreaking but also exhilarating and breathtaking. She writes beautifully but accessibly, a combination I feel too many writers lack these days. I love her voice; I love her stories.
