I went back and forth from 3 to 4 stars because I thought the end dragged on beyond where I expected resolution. But, it is a thoroughly entertaining story, and I feel that I know the characters well now. Wish there was more science in the story like the first one, but looking forward to the next in the series.

Great, great second outing for the Hangman's Daughter and a total twist at the end that I didn't see coming at all! Great book! Love the Hangman, Jacob Kusil :).

Another solid installment of the Hangman's Daughter tales. I really enjoyed enjoyed it overall. The Pötzsch does such a stellar job and painting a picture of the region and the times, that I want to pick up and go back to Germany to visit the places he talks about in-depth (which are real places in Bavaria). The story moved slowly at some points, but I've come to appreciate the slow burn that comes with the Pötzsch's story development. It's very different than the action-packed historical thrillers that you read from some authors. This is more realistic. Great overall story, ready to start the next one. If you get an edition of the book or audiobook that includes Pötzsch's notes on the history and his research of the story, don't gloss it over - it's fantastic.

Well, not finished but I give up. I really want to like this story, the setting, the history.... but it's not working for me. Time to move on...

Early 1600s in a remote part of Germany where hangmen are still a part of the political landscape. This one explores more of the religion of the era--the fanatics (which has a great deal of current revelance) as well as daily believers.
I guessed the villain way too early to enjoy the suspense this time. BUT, I did appreciate learning the medicine practiced at the time as well as the men's fashions worn by the medicus.

A lot of fun to read!!! :-) Action-packed with interesting (and sometimes surprising!) twists and some very well-written characters. I read the first book in the series and enjoyed it. But I think this series might be one of the rare ones where the second book is better than the first one. I felt that "The Dark Monk" was faster-paced compared to book 1. It was also great to learn more about Jakob, Magdalena, and Simon and makes you love them even more. Also, this book (especially Magdalena) has some pretty funny lines...!!! :-) Can't wait to read the next one!!! :-)

Solid follow up to The Hangman's Daughter. Enjoyed the historical setting. I did feel it was a little DaVinci Code at times but it was a fun, quick, summer read.

This is a fun historical mystery series set in 17th century

Not quite as good as the first, but still a solid story and I love the characters.

Absolutely loved this book. It's full of mystery, suspense, and history.
