Unfortunately this one didn't work really well fo me, mainly due to the narration. I didn't like the way the narrator emphasized some words, it seemed really over the top, exaggerated and thus it distracted me from the story. The plot was quite interesting, some secondary characters were good, but I really didn't click with the main character's perspective. I'm not sure I'll continue with the series, in any case it won't be in my top priorities.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to review this book.

When Christine de Bertrand wakes up next to her dead roommate, it's up to DS Gaby Darin to discover who the killer is.

This was the second in a series, but at no time did I feel lost or as though I had missed anything, so it can be read as its own book. I thought that the characters were decently described, and the pacing was okay. there were points where it dragged a bit. I found the twists to be a bit lacking, but overall, it's not a bad book. I just don't know that it was strong enough to keep me enthralled in the narrative.

Darkest Nights will keep you turning page after page without wanting to stop. The mystery and suspense has you hooked right up until the very end.

Despite not reading book 1 in this series I felt that I didn't actually need to and could read this as an individual release. I got a very good picture of who the main character of the series was from the outset. Throughout the book there are references to the previous however the author did a fantastic job at ensuring the reader is kept up to speed with what has happened previously as well as what I can imagine to be a great recap for continuing readers of the series.

The plot is very well paced and the plot thickened with every turn of a page ensuring that the reader is kept guessing and trying to put together the pieces of the puzzle themselves. The novel is written from various different characters point of view which can often become confusing however it is kept chronological therefore the reader is easily able to keep up with the events. Personally I really enjoy getting the story from multiple view points as I was able to put myself into each characters shoes and even second guessing my own thought process about what had actually happened and whether each character was being truthful.

One thing I thought was a little far fetched was Gabby's rise through the ranks despite previous issues meaning that she had to be relocated. I would like to continue reading this series however I do not think it will be any time soon as despite the story being captivating, I feel as though there are plenty of other books that closely follow the same idea. Due to this I shall be giving this novel three stars.

When Christine de Bertrand wakes up after a night out she is horrified to discover that next to her is the dead body of her flatmate Nikki - not the man she thought had been in her bed the previous night. Christine soon finds herself as the main suspect in the case and it’s down to Detective Constable Gabi Darin and her team to prove her innocence. This book was full of twists and turns and always kept me on my toes! I really enjoyed it! I’m really keen to read the first book in the series now because I loved this one!

Plot

DS Gaby Darin has a puzzle on her hands, a puzzle that defies explanation.

Christine de Bertrand certainly got more than she was expecting from the casual hook-up after a night celebrating the anniversary of her divorce. Arrested at the scene she has no explanation or alibi. She also has no one on her side apart from her ex-husband. She’s as confounded as everyone else as to the unexplained presence of the dead body in her bed - the dead body of a woman when she’s positive she went to bed with a man…

I really liked this!

Firstly, should point out that as a Welsh girl I am extremely bias when it comes to Welsh coastal towns because they are quite frankly superior so first off the bat the setting is the winner for me here.

Secondly the characters are very realistic including our main girl Gaby who despite being a good detective is far from perfect with her self-deprecation over her weight and her tendency not to stop at one drink when she knows she’s got work in the morning! I liked the interplay with her work partner Owen, her friendship with Amy and even the back and forth with Pathologist Rusty - something I’m looking forward to as the series goes on.

Thirdly the plot is very gripping. Seemingly two unconnected crimes which keep you guessing right until the end.

This is the second in the series but with reminders of Gaby’s beginnings you could read this perfectly as a stand alone.

On the whole this is a really good crime thriller with interesting attributes that I am excited to see developed.

I received a copy of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley.

3.5* rounded up.

This police procedural begins with Christine waking to find the man she took home last night still apparently sleeping beside her, but it turns out the duvet is covering her murdered flatmate instead. This was an excellent beginning, and indeed most of the novel flowed well as Gaby leads the team investigating this murder and later the disappearance of another woman. However, the ending left me with many questions and seemed rushed.

Why did the murderer kidnap and attack Amy? How did he gain the medical knowledge to pierce the heart? Why didn't he kill Christine as well - wasn't he worried she would remember him?

Had Nikki then discovered Christine's diving knife? Even though it was not kept in the flat itself?

Why on earth did Christine ever divorce Paul? - it was the thinnest excuse I've ever come across.

Why was Gaby so hard on poor Rusty?
