In this second installment of the Jao series, we meet the Lleix, yet another alien species that the xenophobic Ekhat want to eradicate from the universe. Indeed they thought they had done and so did the Jao as they were the ones responsible for carrying the extermination out but a small enclave has survived. Could they be recruited by humans and Jao to join the fight against the Ekhat? Will they be discovered and annihilated by the Ekhat before any of that or will they, on seeing the once-murderous Jao again, simply run away and hide?

The alien species in the Jao series are seriously well created and the characters we get to know are very well fleshed out and interesting. The Jao, the Ekhat and now the Lleix are keeping me hooked. The alienness of each species and culture is so well thought out and the story is very well thought out.

A cracking sequel and I'm hoping the next book will be as good. That said, it was sad to hear of the death of co-author Kathy Wentworth but hopefully the tale will continue as Eric Flint has teamed up with David Carrico to write The Span of Empire.
