the cover may make you think this is a light and fluffy read BUT, the central character in this book is a young girl living with her junkie dad attracts the attention of a local pimp. So....yeah. Be prepared for some dark and uncomfortable moments.

This was shortlisted for the Orange/Bailey's/Womens' fiction prize and the nomination was well-deserved.

So I think I'm a little bit in love with Heather O'Neill, the author of this remarkable book.

The perspective of the 11-, then 12-, then 13-year old protagonist is so true to how I remember understanding the world at that age (although I'm fortunate to have had very different experiences to Baby). Little phrases jump out at you every couple of pages and just seem to stick in your throat or your heart.
