adventurous dark emotional mysterious reflective sad tense medium-paced

An excellent book! Taking the story and some of the best characters in the Song of Ice and Fire epic forward in giant leaps and for perhaps the first time, you have the distinct impression that the story is approaching its culmination. A climactic finale that we can only hope will be as amazing as the road leading up to it.

I can honestly say that the anticipation for the release of the sequel, The Winds of Winter, will be agony and I hope J.R.R.Martin will not take so long with it as he did with this one. After spending so much time in the company of his characters I am loath to think that it might be months or even years before we shall see them again.

I'll start off by saying that I adore Martin's writing and this series in particular. Because of this, I think any book in the Song of Ice and Fire series will get a high rating from me.

That said, I was a bit disappointed in this one. I enjoyed reading it, but after years of waiting, I expected a little bit more. It feels like not a whole lot happened to progress the plot. And then there were new character viewpoints that I couldn't have cared less about, and wondered if we really needed new viewpoints at this point. Especially since we didn't hear much about some characters.

Part of me is annoyed at this whole series, but the bigger part of me still loves it and loves the writing and the world and all that comes with it. I'd say the series peaked with A Storm of Swords, and has just gone downhill from there, but when it peaks so high, even going downhill it's still miles ahead of most fantasy I've read.

adventurous challenging emotional slow-paced

I liked the bit where the author gives a detailed description of a woman undergoing a prolonged encounter with some very unpleasant diarrhoea.

I love this series. It's got everything, fantasy, action, adventure, drama. Everything.

After months of reading this book I have finally finished. And I was not impressed. To many new characters and it just did not seem to progress in the 900+ pages. I guess when you kill off most of the main characters in earlier books they need to be replaced. The new characters were just not that interesting and I really did not have the same connecion. I also did not like the chapters having different names rather than the main character. I have enjoyed the first 4 books but this one was more of a chore than a pleasure. Hopefully it will improve in volume

I didn't enjoy this like the other books in the series, but the cliffhangers were worth it.
