In "The Survival of Molly Southbourne" Tade Thompson delivers a captivating sequel that not only builds upon the foundation laid in its predecessor but also delves even deeper into the complexities of identity, survival, and the haunting legacy of Molly Southbourne's existence. With masterful storytelling and a relentless pace, Thompson takes readers on a thrilling journey that is as thought-provoking as it is pulse-pounding.

Thompson's prose remains as sharp and evocative as ever, drawing readers into Molly's world with vivid imagery and spine-tingling suspense. From heart-pounding action sequences to quiet moments of introspection, every page crackles with tension and intrigue, ensuring readers remain on the edge of their seats from start to finish.

One of the sequel's greatest strengths lies in its continued exploration of Molly's character and the moral and existential dilemmas she faces. As she grapples with reconciling her own humanity with the terrifying consequences of her existence, Molly is forced to confront uncomfortable truths about herself and the nature of her reality. These moments of self-discovery lead to profound insights and evoke gut-wrenching emotions, deepening the connection between readers and the protagonist.

Built nicely on the premise of the first novella while moving in a new direction. Unfortunately the middle section (about Molly in the psych ward) felt like a lot of wasted space in a story so short.

Had some interesting things to say but the core concept is the dumbest thing ever and also why the fuck was it on some cold war era propaganda shit.

The first book in the series blew me away and stuck with me for months. Sadly this sequel didn’t quite live up to that, but it was still very good. Can’t say much about it without spoiling the first book, but there were some twists and turns that I liked a lot, and it was interesting to follow Molly on some self discovery journeys. I didn’t feel as connected to the story this time, but I still had a great time and am looking forward to reading the third one it comes out.

Even though this one didn't really land with me as much and I feel it didn't have the same bang as TMOMS, I still enjoyed it and breezed through it and wished it was longer but kept the same high level intensity, intrigue, and weirdness. I liked TMOMS a little more but I liked how we got things explained here more and introduced to Tamara and her tamaras (that was my fav part but I'm also biased bc they share my name lol). Though, at the same time, having all the mystery spelled out kinda diminished the story somewhat. Like, personally, I liked it more when the experimentation and super secret spy stuff was ambiguous and had no definitive time place and location. Getting the short snippets of James's further deterioration and how the molly burst through him was so freaky. There are points where the medical background of the author jumps out, though, and the writing turns a little too jargon and even pretentious. It makes sense in story, but it kinda annoys me anyway. But I'll live with it. I did enjoy the little pop culture and art references. I learned a thing or two.

A bloody, gory, and surprisingly touching follow up to the first novella, The Survival of Molly Southbourne subverts expectations and dares to ask rather than killing them “have you tried loving them?”

An exploration of identity and mental health, with a heavy dose of horror and sci-fi, a coming of age story with lots of self discovery and some bi/pan rep that made me feel all the things.

Beware some gross body horror and make sure to read the first book before jumping into the sequel!
