Built nicely on the premise of the first novella while moving in a new direction. Unfortunately the middle section (about Molly in the psych ward) felt like a lot of wasted space in a story so short.

Even though this one didn't really land with me as much and I feel it didn't have the same bang as TMOMS, I still enjoyed it and breezed through it and wished it was longer but kept the same high level intensity, intrigue, and weirdness. I liked TMOMS a little more but I liked how we got things explained here more and introduced to Tamara and her tamaras (that was my fav part but I'm also biased bc they share my name lol). Though, at the same time, having all the mystery spelled out kinda diminished the story somewhat. Like, personally, I liked it more when the experimentation and super secret spy stuff was ambiguous and had no definitive time place and location. Getting the short snippets of James's further deterioration and how the molly burst through him was so freaky. There are points where the medical background of the author jumps out, though, and the writing turns a little too jargon and even pretentious. It makes sense in story, but it kinda annoys me anyway. But I'll live with it. I did enjoy the little pop culture and art references. I learned a thing or two.

A bloody, gory, and surprisingly touching follow up to the first novella, The Survival of Molly Southbourne subverts expectations and dares to ask rather than killing them “have you tried loving them?”

An exploration of identity and mental health, with a heavy dose of horror and sci-fi, a coming of age story with lots of self discovery and some bi/pan rep that made me feel all the things.

Beware some gross body horror and make sure to read the first book before jumping into the sequel!

Really cool sequel.
The development of the molly as an individual was really well done, and the discovery that they did not, in fact, have to kill each other, was devastating. Imagine who they could have all been if they’d discovered that early on.
