This is greatly an informative book living through Lale's life in Auschwitz, there is a good coverage of the overall journey however the story does lack some depth. Some events and incidents are mentioned briefly whereas the reader may be interested in more detail. As it was based of a true story there is great detail of the actual individuals and the lives they lived.

This book is absolutely heart wrenching, but the story is written and told so beautifully. After every devastation, I’d just sit there and reflect on the fact that it actually happened. And I’m horrified.

This book was difficult to read, to say the least. Its depictions of Auschwitz were unflinching in its brutality, yet glimpses of kindness kept the reader hopeful. I especially enjoyed the chapters after the characters left Auschwitz and were "saved". The difficulties of navigating what was still a war zone and trying to get home were eye opening, and something many other books of the same genre leave out.
It would have been interesting to know where certain characters ended up (for example, Baretski, Jakub, or Victor). Although I suppose it is more realistic to not know. Certainly it would be very unlikely for Lale or Gita to ever know that information.

This book was incredible. It was so moving and emotional, but there was never a lull. I would highly reccomend this book to everyone.
