A story detailing the experience of a Jewish man in Auschwitz responsible for tattooing the prison numbers of the other Jews. Although the book does focus somewhat on the developing romance between Lale (the main character) and Gita (a female prisoner) the romance is not really the center of the novel. Rather the story emphasizes the experiences of Jews in concentration camps- the horror, the mundane, the brief moments of joy. Very emotionally compelling.

this was a really interesting story about a young man during the Holocaust and how he survived the concentration camps and helped out the other people in the camp to the best of his abilities. the relationships that were formed between the characters were so sweet and i thought that that was the best part of the book,

this book is so unbelievably beautiful and heart wrenching. it's not the typical type of book I usually read however I thought I'd give it a go and I'm so glad that I did. everyone should read this book as its so informative and it really resonates and reminds you how lucky we are to have freedom and to live. I cried endlessly towards the endings, the pictures broke me.

Of the Holocaust stories I’ve read, this may be one of the most unique. Not only did Lale survive, but he thrived and found love.

While the overall story was excellent, the writing style didn’t do it justice. The style was choppy so that the story felt juvenile. I also felt Lale was womanized which inclined me to think lesser of him, which should not have been the case.

For the most part the story follows Lale, but occasionally jumps to Gita, Cilka, and others. Until the end when Lale and Gita are separated, those other perspectives were mostly unnecessary. The first segment of chapter 13 also weirdly jumped to a third omniscient narrator. I also have a qualm with Gita’s prisoner number suddenly change.

I love how people who survived actually had the courage to share their stories.
