This book was difficult to read, to say the least. Its depictions of Auschwitz were unflinching in its brutality, yet glimpses of kindness kept the reader hopeful. I especially enjoyed the chapters after the characters left Auschwitz and were "saved". The difficulties of navigating what was still a war zone and trying to get home were eye opening, and something many other books of the same genre leave out.
It would have been interesting to know where certain characters ended up (for example, Baretski, Jakub, or Victor). Although I suppose it is more realistic to not know. Certainly it would be very unlikely for Lale or Gita to ever know that information.

I finished this book in a single day and it has rendered me speechless. It clearly lays out many of the horrors and atrocities of the holocaust and really makes you think about what people had to go through during this time. I was gripped from start to finish and can't wait to read more of Heather Morris' works

This is the remarkable true story of survival of a Jewish man and woman imprisoned in Auschwitz-Birkenau during the Holocaust. This is also a story of love through all odds in impossible and tragic circumstances.

The story was interesting and it was impactful to get a day-to-day account of what people in the camps had to go through. I just wasn’t a fan of the writing style, which felt very short and direct. The author did mention she intended for this to be a screenplay originally so that could be why.

Overall, still an extremely important book to read to know and understand the horrors that people faced.
