I finished this book in a single day and it has rendered me speechless. It clearly lays out many of the horrors and atrocities of the holocaust and really makes you think about what people had to go through during this time. I was gripped from start to finish and can't wait to read more of Heather Morris' works

This is the remarkable true story of survival of a Jewish man and woman imprisoned in Auschwitz-Birkenau during the Holocaust. This is also a story of love through all odds in impossible and tragic circumstances.

Pretty hard to read content wise but I knew that going in. I think the author did well to put sort of a first person perspective on what it was like live in a concentration camp during WWII with more depth and realness that can be obtained from reading a history book. I know this is based on a true story and a real couple but the way it was written I was not totally sold on the love story. The man just decides he loves a random girl and that’s that? They had some sweet moments and I know that the author had a lot of other information to cover but the love story was kind of the whole point so I wish it was flushed out a bit more.

After reading some other reviews some say this might not be the most historically accurate portrayal, so when reading this please keep this in mind. I don’t think it ruins the book for me as I was more into it from an emotional standpoint but knowing that just don’t take everything as fact.

Echoing other reviews of low rating, the characters have nearly zero personality and the book is written in such a way that it is rushed and lacking in the prose department. A novel should immerse you in the moments and happenings. This book didn't explain why this all came to be and glosses over what was happening at the facilities to instead make this a romance novel. A ROMANCE NOVEL. SET IN AUCHSWITZ. This felt more like a PowerPoint presentation on paper that missed the point.

I understand that this was a retelling of what she was told by the real-life Lale. I suspect the 80 year old didn't have the most reliable memory and his stories morphed over time to become more tolerable for himself to recall. The treasure troves of jewels and having enough chocolate to share on multiple occasions was very unbelievable and credibility was shaken from it.

That being said, it is a quick-paced read and I do feel bad for the people who had to live this. I was hopeful for a miraculous outcome for certain people because of what I know from outside this book. Unfortunately, the author did a poor job bringing depth to most characters presented and seemingly a poor job doing basic research beforehand.

this was a really interesting story about a young man during the Holocaust and how he survived the concentration camps and helped out the other people in the camp to the best of his abilities. the relationships that were formed between the characters were so sweet and i thought that that was the best part of the book,

this book is so unbelievably beautiful and heart wrenching. it's not the typical type of book I usually read however I thought I'd give it a go and I'm so glad that I did. everyone should read this book as its so informative and it really resonates and reminds you how lucky we are to have freedom and to live. I cried endlessly towards the endings, the pictures broke me.

7/10. Not my typical kind of book, but very well-written and very compelling story. Would recommend.
