I read a LOT of WWII books, but for some reason this one just gutted me and hit me in the core of my being. I think because it’s the first one I’ve read that was an account from someone inside the camps and telling the story of what they did to survive and help others survive. I wish this was mandatory reading for students to understand history on an intimate level. The love story was beautiful. The stories of friendships was beautiful. And finding these moments of beauty among the bleakness of the story, were the glimmers that kept me going, because I had to know how it ended.

I think this book deserves five hearts instead of stars. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

This book is a romance caught up in such a terrible time. Learning about how truly awful the Nazi's were from the perspective of someone who dealt with them for years, has made my negative feelings intensify. But my respect for the survivors become immeasurable.

This book was incredible. It was so moving and emotional, but there was never a lull. I would highly reccomend this book to everyone.

Although fictionalized, the book does do a decent job describing the horrors of concentration camps. I’ve only read about “regular” prisoners but this is set with a special prisoner as the main. Not a sympathizer but maybe a little pragmatic about saving himself and those he cares about. I do think it was a good story about humans keeping hope and surviving when faced with impossible odds.
