Angel of Greenwood

Randi Pink

4.23 AVERAGE

Have you ever thought poetry in YA was generally of poor quality? Same here. That's not the case with Randi Pink's Angel of Greenwood. The poetry was beautiful. It wasn't angsty or soppy, just lovingly written. I'd recommend this just for the poetry alone.

Content Warnings Fire/firebombing, racism, mob violence - though none is too graphic.

Angel Hill and Isaiah Wilson live in Greenwood, Black Wall Street, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. One follows Booker T. Washington, and the other follows WEB. Du Bois. However, despite the turmoil in their own lives, they fall for each other. But little do they know that May 31st, 1921, will change their lives, and everyone living in Greenwood forever.

First off, I love that I am seeing more books over the Tulsa Race Massacre! Second, I feel like I misunderstood what this book was about when I picked it up. I mistakenly thought most of the book was going to be over the even itself. Whereas, I got about forty pages to it. Aside from that, I thought this was a solid book to introduce young readers to the Tulsa Race Massacre. Angel and Isaiah were interesting characters to watch interact. Angel was very mature, almost too mature, in my opinion. Isaiah was your typical teenager who is really good at writing poetry and doesn't know how to drop his toxic friend. I loved how they debated WEB. Du Bois and Booker T. Washington; this was one of my favorite parts of the books. However, the rest of the book wasn't what I thought.

Powerful, beautiful, and emotional. Randi Pink paints a glorious picture of life in Greenwood, which only makes the events of the Tulsa massacre even more tragic and horrifying.

This book is so beautifully written. Slow to start, you can feel the tension build as the story progresses to the end. Then, the author hits you with the full force of the events of May 31, 1921.
