I wanted to like this more than I did. Ultimately, this just wasn't the book for me - Angel and Isaiah's romance, while sweet enough, felt somewhat rushed and haphazard. I felt that they were more stand-ins for Ideas for the first 2/3 of the book, what with the somewhat heavyhanded discussions of Booker T. Washington and WEB Du Bois and the different philosophies they espoused. I wanted that woven in more organically, rather than "now we shall read passages and debate them". If this book had just been the first 2/3, I probably would have DNFed it or given it a lower rating, because it felt incredibly disjointed for me. But then the part with the Greenwood massacre happened, and that was handled incredibly well, with excellent pacing and writing throughout. So I bumped up my rating accordingly.

I think someone who likes heavily poetic styles of writing or wants to luxuriate in philosophies will be better suited for this book. The subject matter is important, though, and I can appreciate this book simply for bringing more knowledge to people about what happened in Greenwood, and about Washington and Du Bois.

This is excellent. I loved every second. It made me cry and it made me really really angry. Read it. Reflect on it. Do better.

The writing was absolutely gorgeous! And I loved getting to know a bit more about Booker T. Washington and WEB Du Bois in the process. I loved how it was added to the story.

I kind of wanted more backstory of both of the main characters in order to fully get on board with the romance, but it was definitely cute af. I also would have loved to see their relationship develop over a longer period of time.

Even though knowing what’s kind of going to be happening at the end, I was still heartbroken. I knew some things going into it, but a bomb?! Really? I didn’t know that! Jezus!

A very beautiful and powerful read nonetheless.

This book left me completely shattered, emotionally. I literally felt the full gamut of emotions. She told such an amazing story that left me both in tears and hopeful.

I don't cry when I read. I don't know why. This beautifully written book is the closest I've ever gotten to crying while reading.
