Epic fantasy series but has a cool setup, the main viewpoint characters are the three children of the former Emperor and they all have their own side stories that come together in interesting ways. Lots of good combat scenes and some politics and magical history.
This started out so strong, I loved legitimately having Adares pov not just a few look ins like the first book. I was surprised but very pleased that we got a pov from Gwenna.
Spoilers for the things that bothered me greatly:
Kadens sudden shift to master planner and thinker did not seem believable. He was way to quick to think Adare was the bad guy which really bothered me. Speaking of, pretty much making her the bad guy by the end pissed me off. So many things seemed out of character I didn't get it. At this point I'm not even sure if I want to read the next book cause I was so bothered by the climax of this.

Excellent follow-up to the first book! This book really ramped up the story, and it brought in some new concepts I really liked. Now I have to wait for the next one, which is sad.
I still don't know if I really buy into Adare as a character, though. She gets some good bits in this book, but her story still seems a little anemic compared to those of her brothers. All three of the siblings are kind of blundering about, which is what makes for a good story, but her brothers blunder with a bit more informed purpose. Adare has good reasons for how she is, but I still wish she seemed to have any area of expertise at all that she could contribute.
I really did love seeing more of Annick and Gwenna this time around, though, and getting more world backstory was fabulous. I can't wait for the next one.

I am really, really, REALLY digging this series. A great sequel with more than one bomb dropped (especially towards the end). Pacing was great, characters developed well (even though I heartily wanted to punch three of them multiple times)…highly recommended series.

This author has created the most annoyingly treacherous character who topped my list of despicable characters.
Really enjoyed the book.
of course there is the normal fallacy in fantasy that one family has more power etc... But I could not put the book down, it was just a great read. I was surprised by how long the book seemed to take, as I tried to devour it as quick as i could.
I just wish I could like Adare more as a character, at the end of the book I really was just pissed at her.
