I do not approve of cliffhangers! They should not be allowed to exist :(
The Providence of Fire was a spectacular sequel to The Emperor's Blade. Thoughts to come soon, I just need to sort them out!

First I thought I liked the first book better. But now that I've had some time to reflect on it, I've realized that this book is actually better than the first one.
I love following the different characters and each of their journeys. They are all so unique and also complex and just really well written.
Also, that last chapter of the book just proved again that Brian Staveley's prose is simply stunning. I can't stop thinking about it.

For more spoilery thoughts, please read my progress notes! They really include all I have to say about this one.
This review may have some minor spoilers suggested.
It didn't have the same charm as the first one. There were parts I found myself skimming through for reasons I can't really explain? Maybe a touch of annoyance, maybe lack of care of the character I was introduced.
Adare is, by far, my least favorite. A dangling puppet guided by whatever anyone tells her. She embraces facts without a prompt investigation, even though she knows the one giving the information lies. For whatever reason that is. That may turn in the last book. There may be some outstanding reason why she behaves in such a way, but for the time being, it just makes her character an unwanted obstacle.
There were certain decisions she made that just made me groan. Bitch, no. Bitch, you don't get to do that.
Kaden continues to be my favorite, Valyn a close second. There were members of his Wing I was confused about, and some who fell into certain circumstances I embraced.

I wanted to really like this book, but I finished it and could only think "WTF?!". In the end, I'm not sure there is a character I really root for or care about anymore. This book seemed to add a lot of lore into the world, but at the cost of character.
While I ran out to pick up this book, I'm not sure if I'll bother with the next one.

good, especially for a middle book. good logistics. characters got a bit more distinct though still a bit samey. plot got a bit deus ex machina (literally) that I'm not sure I like, I thought the existing characters and plot were ok without, but we'll see how this will play out in the next book.
