I was excited to continue with this series, but was a little afraid it was going to be mostly about Adair. I liked her character in the first book, but wasn't sure she could carry a whole book by herself. The book actually divided the time between the three siblings, and Adair's section was just as gripping as the others. There were plenty of surprises and intriguing developments, and of course the ending left you wanting to go right onto the next book.
This is a really good fantasy series. The problem I have is that sometimes I feel that they are incredibly overwritten. The ride is good, and I especially enjoyed the last 10% of the book but it just feels like some parts can drag. That being said, I love the character development and there are just so many good and realistic characters in this novel. Plus, there is a bunch of strong female characters. This series is really good.
Can't wait for the third!!!
I loved this book.I can't wait for the next on the series to come out. Hopefully it doesn't take more than six year to come out

It’s been 87 years since I read this book, but I just want to chime in and say if you are looking for adult fantasy that not only features women but treats them as characters… this is one of the good ones.
The first book fell into some genre-specific pitfalls with their female characters, but as Stavely expanded the world here, new character is came into focus and the old one’s were expanded on.
This is overall a strong fantasy series. The protagonists are interesting, the magic system enticing, and the world unique. Each book seems to be about pushing these characters to the limit and seeing if they break or go stronger—meaning it’s sometimes a hard read, but very good.
But a year after I read it, one of the things I immediately remember about this book is SO many women. Women allowed to swear, kick ass, be feminine, act in politics, be sexual, be reserved, or any combination thereof. I hate when there is one type of woman in a fantasy series, and this book strayed from that trope.
(Even though Adare is stupid and makes bad, infuriating decisions)

"People kill to get power, they kill to keep power, and they kill if they think they might lose it, which is pretty much always. Even if you and I both stay out of it, even if we both die, whoever came after us will keep coming. They’ll find the next threat, the next worrisome voice, the next person with the wrong name or the wrong skin."
I just finished this and to say it set my mind on fire would be an understatement. Brian has turned the plot on its head after reading the end i m left gasping like a fish out of water anticipating his next stab in the heart of the empire, we are left with gods and goddesses having taken flesh again to take hand in correcting the wrongs in the world Adare touched by Intara, Triste inhabited by Ciena her husband(Ciena's) inhabiting Long Fist the Lods of pain Meshkent and Valyn after having consumed the slarn kings egg now apears to harbor Hull himself althought that has not been stated that is my reading of it only Kaden is untouched by the gods and yet he is the most likely to lead the new republic into what is to come.
Burned through this one with pleasure! Great continuation of the phenomenal opening book with a more balanced focus on the three main PoV's. I really enjoyed each story arc and how they meshed together. Already just over a third of the way through the final entry and, if it holds up to the same level, this series will have cracked my top 10. Epic!!!

OK. Especially do not love the way female characters are written, but all in all entertaining and interesting. Will read the third book.
