I really enjoyed this book. It's quick, but it feels incredibly human. The format seems to mimic the dizzying effect of sudden grief and the quagmire of emotions between love and hate and loneliness and longing and then trying to pretend that you're okay enough to keep participating in capitalism.

Okay, the little blurb on the jacket made me think this was going to be a different type of story, but I quite liked this. This is the kind of book where you absolutely hate the protagonist and just want to shake her and tell her she’s been the asshole the whole time, but in a good way.

Here is the Beehive is proof that you can very much enjoy the reading experience while not liking the main character. Ana is a lawyer who is grieving the death of her lover, Connor. But they were both married and the affair was secret so she cannot publicly mourn him. Her involvement in his legal affairs - executor of his will - and her insinuation of herself into the life of his widow and their children are clearly not to be approved. Yet the writing was beautiful, capturing her grief and isolation, while highlighting the fact that the relationship was not exactly what Ana wanted it to be.
