This book was a "thriller - blind date with a book". The ending is *chef's kiss*. Truly, I consider myself an avid thriller/mystery reader and this one had me genuinely shocked with the twist. The story itself is excellent, thought it seemed longer than necessary. There was plot points that I am not sure were necessary to actually further the plot as a whole. Overall, a good read.

4.5 ⭐️ Still immensely enjoyed this book even knowing the twist from the beginning. The story was fine, the writing was fine but what really got me was the letter from Sophie to her mom in the end. I have a daughter and everything that was written in that letter is everything that I want for/from my kid. Spread your wings and fly away but please, still need me and be my baby always

3.5. not bad! I just wished the author knew more about police procedures. The first cop who comes to your house when you call 911 doesn't dust for prints... ;)

This book just felt messy to me. There was almost a bait and switch going on, and it suffered from an excess of red herrings.

SpoilerWorst of all, the ending reads like it was written by a domestic violence apologist. No, just no. I don't care what Andrew was like at the end, it does NOT negate who he was when he was terrorizing his wife. You don't get a pass when you come inches from strangling someone to death.

Sophie's boyfriend also troubled me. He exhibits some really terrible behavior that's meant to point the finger at him, but then he gets off scott free in the end because he's not the perpetrator either. Their relationship had some seriously toxic overtones, and I didn't like that those overtones were more or less dismissed in the end when they were no longer necessary to the plot.

I used to really like this author, but her last couple of books just did not work for me. I think this is where she and I part ways.
