So I struggled with this book and honestly don't remember as much as I wish I would have. I honestly think a lot of it has to do with listening to the audiobook. For some reason classics are harder for me to listen to as an audiobook.
The story is very interesting and I did learn about some new sea creatures that actually exist. I guess I just wish it would have drawn me in even more.
I definitely recommend it to those who like underwater creatures and phenomen.

Pretty good for a book that's like 10% lists of fish. 3 stars for the book itself but an extra one for this excellent critical edition comparing several versions of the manuscript as well as adjacent correspondence, beautifully cataloguing the interplay between Verne's changing intentions for the story and Hetzel's moral-censorial interference (not all of which was negative).

Very much just a fun tour of the sea with lots of Latin names of sea creatures.
20,000 legues around the world, not to the bottom of the ocean.
This is a classic book, and I'm really glad I read the Walter translation (which prides itself on being accurate.)
The story is well-known, but I think I'm not the target audience for this novel. This, like Moby Dick, is a novel of the sea and spends pages and pages describing the types of plants and animals below the waves.
Unfortunately I don't know a wrasse from a triggerfish so a lot of the details were lost on me. I think an annotated version (with hotlinks to pictures of the fish and plants described) would be great.
