This book has made me astonished and I am right now at a loss for words to express my admiration for the wittiness of Jules Verne. He was definitely a futurist. It is very difficult to believe this book was written in 1870. This book will take you to a new world under the ocean.

French oceanographer Pierre Aronnax and his assistant Conseil join an expedition organized by the US Navy to hunt down a mysterious monster. But was it actually a sea monster or something else?

Captain Nemo was a mysterious character. I would always wonder what happened to him. So I did a bit of research on the internet and found out he was actually an East Indian Prince who lost his kingdom to British Imperialism. So he had this immense hatred towards imperialism. In 1857, the Indian subcontinent came under the British Empire and this book was written in 1870. So Jules Verne was not only a futurist and a master of imagination. He was also good at expressing his disdain towards imperialism through his writings inexplicitly.

This book is classic science fiction. It is a must-read for those who know no bound to the imagination.

some fantastic scenes and generally a great story but there is a lot of unnecessary description of fish

I was all set to give ol' Jules a pass, being a man of his time, on his lauding the whalers as great men, but then he went and pointed out twice how their greed would decimate the whale population and destroy the balance of the ocean ecosystem. There were flaws, whether stylistic or timeworn or because of the translation, but it was more fun than dull. I loved the way Verne described the tunnel shortcut and the escape from the ice in Antartica. I actually thought the characterizations were pretty good. Enigmatic Nemo, the tragic and faithful Conseil, and the he-man oaf Ned. For Arronax, I have only two words. Fish list.

This is an old classic, and it is starting to show it. While it is hard to fault the premise, for at the time it was a true original, the preferred writing style of an audience has changed a great deal. There is a great deal of action and some great scenes and characters, yet they get buried in between pages of descriptions of molluscs, fish, engine design and electricity generation.

Read it gently, and be patient. It does take you into a new world of the mysterious Captain Nemo, but it also takes you back to the 1870's, when adventure was served up with some detailed science. Most of his books are like this, so you may pick one based on your interest in geology (Journey to the centre of the Earth), engineering (Mysterious Island), or the depths of the sea.

There is no faulting his imagination, for these books have become entertaining movies. A great story will always survive, and without doubt this is a great story.
