Reading this was a journey in and of itself!
I cannot summarize my reading of this novel worthily. Nevertheless, the journey of my reading this novel, starting during the pandemic as a family reading selection, and finishing by myself, is now over.
This was not an easy novel to read. At times it was dreadfully tedious, akin to reading every word of encyclopedia entries. At times it was exciting, imagining the underwater marvels and naval battles. And in between, the slow and sporadic march of page turns went ever and on.
Having conquered this novel thusly, am I better off than before? Yes, I think so. Would I recommend it to others? No, except for cases of encouraging self-torture in others, or to cheer on the attempt to start and finish a classic novel from before modern times.
I will note that reading it on the Kindle app was helpful with its instant lookup of archaic words, phrases, and confirmation of Verne’s made-up words!
Good bye, M. Arronax, Ned and Conseil! And good bye, Captain Nemo. We shall not meet again, except for those moments when I may gaze upon my daughter’s framed painting of the Nautilus, if we were ever to hang it on the wall again.
