Cute story! I didn’t connect with the characters or the plot as others may have, but overall this was a good read. I will say that it was hard to reach for this book since the first half was a bit slow.

4.25 ⭐️ a good book for those who liked The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. I am not sure I would’ve enjoyed it so much had I not listened to Meryl Streep narrate the audiobook. Not deeply entertaining, but well written

Enjoyable read, probably a 3.5 star but I’m rounding up. I enjoyed the writing and plot, I got sucked into Lara’s life story and I liked the concept of the character telling this to her daughters, the idea of the reader knowing details that she chooses not to reveal to her children. It explored interesting topics like how private the past can feel, how much we change as people and would the people we love today have approved of us or even accepted our former selves. My only pet peeve was the way the mother-daughter and sisters’ interactions were depicted: dialogues and situations were of the dreamy Virgin Suicides type that litteraly never happens in real life (especially between grown women). They also all seem to cry or get upset for very weird reasons? I don’t know, the emotional reactions from the characters were over the top and had me rolling my eyes a few times.

It took me a while to fully enjoy this book. But the more I read the more it started growing on me. A great story of growth, maturity and reflection. The mother / daughters development in the book was something I really enjoyed.

I found Belcanto too melodramatic, and I didn't care that much for the Dutch House, but this book, especially in Meryl Streep's narration, is easily 5 stars.
