This was amazing. I had to binge read it as it was just so intriguing and full of mystery. I was completely in love with Shazi and Khalid. I enjoyed the multiple POVs as that really made the characters seen and understood. The big mystery of why exactly the Caliph had to murder these poor girls every dawn and leave only suffering and pain for the families.

We follow Shazi who volunteered to be the next bride of Khalid. She comes in and she is brave and strong. Her personality was beautiful and so full of conflict as she does grow to care for the Caliph despite what he has done. She lures him with the promise of stories and stops halfway so that he will let her live another day. This plan starts to work. And her true intentions are revealed and why she actually volunteered. I was not too surprised as to what the reason was for why the Caliph needed to murder his wives as I kind of had a feeling that it was this particular reason. But, hearing it come from Khalid was painful and full of sorrow and empathy. It also made sense. I really felt for Shazi. Her conflict was completely understandable. Khalid too. He was so interesting to read about. His backstory of his mother and the backstory of the mystery.

I recommend this book. It left off on such a cliffhanger that I’m so excited to read book 2! It’s left a lot to be looked into and a lot to be explored. The writing was beautiful and the representation absolutely amazing. I loved the beautiful descriptions of this world, of the food, the weapons, the clothes and the language.
