This book was absolutely beautiful, from the visuals to the story. It did make me cry a bit, I just loved how Tien and his mom used fairytales as a common way to communicate.

Beautiful story with beautiful art. I loved the coloring of the pages, which made it easy to follow as the story switches from past to present to fairy tales. Reading the author’s notes at the end also helped to understand the complexity of creating this graphic novel.

I LOVED this graphic novel. it was a little slow getting started, but it really picked up after that. i loved the way this book intertwined the story of a family with the fairy tales and showed how important they were to the family. i honestly think that the stories were balanced incredibly well and that the author masterfully interweaved them. the characters were all so distinct and lovely. the conflict was built so well. i would recommend this to anyone. i also loved how the text was used in this story in conjuction with the art.

This graphic novel follows Tiến, the son of a Vietnamese refugee. Tiến is gay and he doesn’t know how to tell his parents and is scared of what they will say. Tiến‘s struggles to communicate with his parents because of the language barrier, but they communicate with eachother through storytelling. This story and the artwork is beautiful and poignant.

As the child of a refugee, this book really struck a nerve with me and it really encapsulated all of the feelings that have been going around. I absolutely adored the art and the characters and I would recommend this book to everyone!!
