An enjoyable read. Felt a little lost at first when there were references to Detective Max King's past that seemed to be from a previous book. It finally started to make sense later on as the connection between him and Dr. Joy Burton was more fully revealed. It appears they were together as foster children and adopted by separate law enforcement fathers and both have followed in their adoptive parent's footsteps. Joy is a bit strange.
The mystery itself was ok, they are trying to find who murdered a woman. The victim had a gambling problem and there are multiple suspects. I had actually figured out who the killer was fairly early on. After the murder was figured out the last couple of chapters felt more like an add on and it was definitely the set up for the next book.
