Young Avengers introduces a cast of new teenage superheroes gathered to fill the void left after the Avengers disbanded.

Over the course of this book the characters grow from being loveable kids trying to live up to their idols into fully fledged superheroes.

This is a true modern Marvel classic and a must read for all superhero fans! It’s probably my favourite Marvel series of the 21st Century. Hulkling and Wiccan (introduced at first as Asgardian) are one of Marvel’s best superhero couples!

Right at the start J. Jonah Jameson asks who they Young Avengers are. Well, they’re your new favourite superheroes.

Having enjoyed Gillen's run of Young Avengers years ago, I figured it was finally time to check out the characters' origins. And I quite enjoyed this! Kate is already so badass (though also very sexualized, ugh, she's a teenager!!) and I was pleasantly surprised by how low-key and matter-of-fact Teddy and Billy's relationship is portrayed. While I didn't really care about any of the plot after the battle with Kang, I still enjoyed the characters and their team dynamic. There were definitely pieces that bugged me (Kate's sexual assault backstory; Cassie's over-sexualization (she's FOURTEEN!!); avoiding the word "gay" like the plague; Eli's character deserved better), but overall I liked it a lot. 3.5 stars

Wasn't expecting Jessica Jones to pretty much be the mom of the Young Avengers, but that was nice to read.

It was great to read how the Young Avengers came to be! I enjoyed the teenage rebellion and cheered them on as they fought against the Avengers for their right to exist and be heroes who help people. I liked getting the origin stories of some of the characters, too. A strong start to the Young Avengers story!

This is a good comic book, right here. Fun, exciting plot; great characterizations; excellent art—it's got it all and then some. Heinberg's writing finds an ideal balance between cliche and natural high school drama, which makes his characters feel natural and distinct even amidst an increasingly out-there storyline. I'll admit to feeling a bit bogged down by some of the time-travel stuff in the first half, and the latter half's more dramatic, intergalactic plot could've used a little more depth in its more emotional moments. But it all works as well as those storylines can hope to work, as Heinberg maintains a firm focus on the young heroes, never losing sight of the interpersonal dynamics that make them so enjoyable and refreshing.

Cheung's artwork is really something, too. He gives the title a quintessentially "superhero" style that makes it abundantly clear early on that this isn't a YA spin-off but a rich experience of its own. His character designs are sharp and memorable, with clever costumes that pop off the page with personality. I especially loved how expressive he draws the characters, which makes Heinberg's already strong dialogue even stronger. And his splash pages, hoo boy, are they great. Dramatic, heroic, bursting with energy and personality—it rules.

I enjoyed this a lot and will absolutely seek out what's next for these characters. It gets a very enthusiastic 4.5 from me.

Team: Kang, Eli Bradley (Patriot), Billy Kaplan (Wiccan), Tommy (Speed), Teddy Altman (Hulkling), Kate Bishop (Hawkeye), and Cassie Lang (Stature).

Set after the events of House of M. Kang the Conqueror is lurking, and younger him is building a team to stop his older self.

This is SUCH A GOOD TEEN STORY! The dynamics within the group, their relationships with their parents/guardians, and their love for being heroes is really well done. We managed to explore everyone’s back stories and connect with them as people not just as heroes.

The Insta love was a bit meh. Particularly between Cassie and Kang but I’ll let it slide because this also gave one of my favourite comic couples: Hulkling and Wiccan. Absolutely adorable.

This was a VERY fun read.
