So many mixed feelings about this book. I its ideas, and Potok's writing style captivated me this time (it doesn't always). But, wow, does it suffer from Men Writing Women syndrome.

It is nice to read about religion in a way that doesn't paint it as a force for evil. This is a story about stories, an look at growing up in a cold and scary world, and about finding warmth in it anyways. This is a wonderful book.
