I think this story was about finding your cultural identity in this world. A world that is full of war and dissatisfaction. It also brings forth the importance of having the ability to speak certain languages to be able to truly connect with others. I also learned more about Korean and Japanese culture, which was nice because I'm very uneducated when it comes to the fact that many Koreans have fled from war etc. This book was just okay! It was well written, but I didn't feel super excited about it. I was waiting for some plot twists to happen, but it never really did. There was a lot of things that could've been added to the story.

✨ Thrifted ✨
I found this one a bit odd and not quite to my taste 🥲 There were definitely moments where I was excited to read parts of this book (e.g. the end when it’s ramping upand the boat goes without her grandparents 😳), but the other times I felt it was a bit too bleak. I also was unsure of Claire’s connection with Mieko 😫
All in all, I’d give this book 3 out of 5 stars. Thank you ✨

It took me far longer than expected to read such a short book. I didn’t enjoy this as much as I thought I would, which is a bit of a disappointment. I don’t mind reading stories that aren’t as plot-focused, but The Pachinko Parlour felt a little too sparse for my taste. That being said, given the theme of identity (especially found in culture/language) and the crises that come with it, I can’t help but wonder if the sparseness of the writing (and translation, perhaps) was deliberate. It’d be interesting to read this in the original French, just to see what nuances may have disappeared.

A lovely, sobering story on the reality of growing up and feeling lost in what is supposedly home. Nothing happens and yet everything happens -- I feel like it exists in a hazy piece of film.
