DNF I liked the many characters I met early. I liked the writing style. However, it was too much like homework so I'm putting it aside.

Okay this book was a slow starter but I really ended up loving it. Eliot paints such a complex landscape and sometimes you wonder why she’s talking about all these different people but it all comes together. I love the mix of love story and class/social standing and politics. It’s certainly a challenging read, but worth it!
Also, screw rosamund and sir James

I read this because I thought I should, and while much of this Victorian work was boldly beyond it's time, I found myself saying, "Alright, already."

I enjoyed Middlemarch much more than I expected I would. George Eliot was an impeccably talented writer so I don't know why I would expect anything less than a masterpiece from her.
George Eliot transported me to the wonderful town of Middlemarch and introduced me to the lovely Dorothea and her unfortunate first match Mr. Casaubon, sarcastic Mary Garth and her family, the prideful Vincy family, Will Ladislaw, Mr. Lydgate, the scandalous Mr. Bulstrode, and Mr. Brooke (you know).
Eliot narrated the story so beautifully, making sure to introduce me to all the residents of Middlemarch. She made me feel so sorry for Dorothea in her unhappy marriage, but made pains to show her readers why Mr. Casaubon acted as he did. I laughed at Mary Garth's sarcastic wit and her constantly teasing Fred. I groaned at Rosamond who never listened to her husband and was constantly scheming behind his back. Lastly, I smiled when Will Ladislaw finally professed his love towards Dorothea, giving her the happy ending she so deserved.
This is a long read that is not for the faint of heart, however the reward in having finished it makes it all worth it!

While reading Middlemarch I couldn't help but continuously meditate on the pleasures of reading and it's impact. Although the book was stilted in some places and over-indulgent in centering the author's voice (I assume, but the research on the meta storyteller in Middlemarch seems mixed) in others, I had a fantastic time with these characters and getting sucked into this provincial town. Eliot's work is surprisingly big in heart and takes a careful, detailed investigation into human nature and close relationships in small towns. I really did enjoy it and I'm very glad to have read this.
Slow clap for being the first book to make me cry in I can't remember how many years.
