Truly masterful. The sheer scope of the novel is simultaneously daunting as it is admirable. It could have been shorter, but the majority of novel fits together like uniquely constructed puzzle pieces. There are truly no side characters here. Each one receives dedicated chapters, perspectives, and storylines that are seamlessly interwoven. While the vocabulary gets advanced at times and the chapters dense, the euphoria you’ll feel once you’ve finished the novel is all the motivation you need to keep reading!
A wonderful book about ordinary life (for the time). Beautiful written.

A reread to check if this is still one of my all time favourite novels. No surprise. It was just as engrossing and enchanting as I remembered.
It starts off slow and gentle and I found myself thinking 'is this it? Is this what everyone has been raving about?' But it builds and builds, layer upon layer upon layer. You are drawn into a subtle web of characters and events and suddenly find yourself reading till four in the morning because you just can't put it down. Unusually, I found myself interested in what happened to each set of characters in each subplot. Great book.
