O twist no final 😯

Its the 'Men' book from the 'Annihilation' author. I wouldn't punish a friend with it.

This book was like a fever dream -- I spent most of it with an uneasy, mild nausea and had to regularly break for lighter fare. That said, I enjoyed the hell out of it.

The atmosphere of Wind Gap, MO is as thick and oppressive as the summer weeks that play out inside it. The characters are lush, memorable, and more-often-than-not loathsomely human (in a compelling way). Occasionally they border on the caricature side of the dramatic, but it helps to sell the southern gothic pastiche Flynn sets up so well.

The mystery at the heart of the novel has a satisfying (if slightly predictable) conclusion, but the place where the story really shines is in its portrayal of a troubled family dealing with generations of hurt and trauma. Witnessing such dysfunctional characters orbiting around each other is darkly fascinating in a car crash kind of way: you don't enjoy it, but you can't stop yourself from looking.

This is the kind of story that will stick with me for a long time, which is good because I'm not sure I'll be able to bring myself to read it again.
