I remember liking it better the first time I've read it, but still enjoyed it nonetheless. It really is the character study more than twisty thriller and goes so deep into darkness of the psyche that it's sometimes hard to read. The writing was engaging, but the ending was a little rushed, perhaps. I'm quite impressed this was Gillian's debut.

Since I read [a:Gillian Flynn|2383|Gillian Flynn|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1232123231p2/2383.jpg]'s books in reverse chronological order and considering this was her first novel, it's really hard to compare this book to [b:Gone Girl|21480930|Gone Girl|Gillian Flynn|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1432019852s/21480930.jpg|13306276]. But Gillian does such a great job of creating a scene where you are drawn in. Her writing is super sick and twisted and she STILL gets with with a crazy plot twist. Just like in [b:Gone Girl|21480930|Gone Girl|Gillian Flynn|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1432019852s/21480930.jpg|13306276] and [b:Dark Places|5886881|Dark Places|Gillian Flynn|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1354988288s/5886881.jpg|6873353].
This was so dark and pretty anti-woman. It was published in 2006, but Flynn paints women as beacons for pain and suffering. There is also some pretty offputting descriptions of children and young people and adults interacting with them in INCREDIBLY inappropriate ways (see: Camille taking drugs directly from her thirteen year old sister's mouth at a house party full of intoxicated underage kids??) The murders become almost secondary as Camille is forced to interact with her incredibly strange mother, and it's clear that mental illness runs in the family. Every character is basically the worst person you've ever met and have zero redeeming qualities, including Camille. She herself is aware she isn't a great reporter, has virtually no journalistic ethics, is clearly going through a mental health crisis, and yet continues on as if suffering in this way is perfectly normal. I think it's an interesting concept for a thriller but goes off the rails almost immediately and never finds its way back to coherence.
