The graphic descriptions of cutting really turned me off. I'm not partial to self harm as a general thing. The book itself was pretty good though.
As someone who dips in and out of her reading but knows that she loves thrillers this is exactly what I have been looking for. All I wanted was a book that would engross me and rip me to shreds and have me so compelled that I wouldn’t put it down and this was it. Gillian’s style of writing is not what I would usually go for but I think this one works because of the characters and the setting give her so much to work with and those are the same things that keep you hooked. From early on I knew who one of the 2 killers was but it’s waiting for that moment when Camille knows and that moment really did deliver. I cried?! I’m not a cryer. It defo had some shock factor to it, mainly from Camille and her mother’s relationship and the way she so directly expressed her ‘love’ to her. I also love the simplicity of the title’s meaning in relation to the book. At the end of the book all I wanted to do was give Camille an endless hug. The tragedy that she goes through in her childhood is bad enough before adding what she experiences when coming back but the most tragic thing of all is her fathoming of the reality of her home and how she must return to the state of a child by the end to really learn and grow into the adult that she is.

The atmosphere in Sharp Objects is exactly what I expected from Gillian Flynn—dark, unsettling, and dripping with small-town secrets. The writing style is sharp and kept me hooked at first.
But honestly, I figured out who the killer was about halfway through, and that really killed the suspense for me. From that point on, I was just waiting for the story to catch up instead of being surprised.
Still, I appreciated the raw look at trauma, dysfunctional family ties, and Camille’s struggles. The book is definitely disturbing and well-written, but the mystery itself lost its edge too early.
Worth reading, but not my favorite book of the year.

Flynn is so good at writing about women doing insane things. The setting really added to the eeriness of the story and every character was so problematic. Definitely some moments that made my skin crawl. I sort of guessed the murder but then there were more twists I didn’t see coming. Crazy book that I’ll be thinking about for a while. (I do like Gone Girl a bit more!)
